Lingfield Scribes have been meeting at the Community Centre for several years and share a passion for the art of calligraphy. In a highly complex technological world, learning to write with a square edged pen and ink is an exploration, as you go from simple strokes to form the letters of a classical script.
You are warmly invited to an exhibition of their work at Lingfield & Dormansland Community Centre. Entitled ‘From Start to Finish’ the exhibition runs from 17th April to 18th May in the Orpen Lounge and entry is free.
Members of the group are exhibiting a variety of art and different lettering scripts which shows the work of experienced calligraphers and complete beginners.
To enable visitors to see how the work is planned and evolves over a period of time, an A2 folder showing plans & ideas from the members’ first drafts & experiments to the final work on display will part of the exhibition for people to browse through.
There will be a folder showing Edward Johnston’s single handed revival of calligraphy from biblical manuscripts & his teaching examples of a ‘foundational’ hand from the 1920’s. Also the logo & contemporary alphabet which he designed for London Transport
Exhibition open Monday to Thursday 9 – 4.30pm, Friday 9 – 12pm and Saturdays 1 – 4pm. (Please call 01883 382313 in advance if visiting on Saturdays)
If what you see inspires you, Lingfield Scribes welcome new members to their small, friendly group and aim to share the skills and enjoyment of calligraphy with everyone. For more information visit www.lingfieldscribes.co.uk
