The RH7 History Group present “Farewell to Arms?” An exhibition depicting the end of World War 1 and its aftermath
Following a memorable exhibition to mark the beginning of World War 1, members of the RH7 History Group have continued to research the effects of the First World War on our local community. The results will be presented to mark the centenary of the end of The Great War.
The four villages covered in the research (Lingfield, Dormansland, Crowhurst and Blindley Heath) lost 146 men during the war; all the names on the four war memorials have been followed up. Over 600 men returned home, many scarred physically and mentally. The exhibition will tell some of the stories of the men who went to war, of their families and what life was like during the years following the Armistice.
The archives of the local newspapers have been searched to find news and views from 1918 and the following years. The unrest felt nationally was reflected locally and emotions were running high. Remembrance was of great importance especially to those who had lost a loved one. The story of the Poppy Appeal will be told and there will be an opportunity to make your own poppy.
This will be a unique opportunity to learn about our local community’s First World War story.
The exhibition runs from Sunday 27th May to Sunday 3rd June at Lingfield and Dormansland Community Centre
Daily 10.00-5.00, Late Night Thursday 8.00pm, Sundays 12.00-4.00. Admission Free.
